A Remake of Master of Magic

That is one basic title, but I guess my creativity is crap tonight. See I just fought with audio on the streaming PC for a couple hours. After a fight with the streaming PC trying to get it ready to stream to TikTok for the first time. This is about a game though so I will shut up about that. While early December hammered us with new releases, it didn’t ease up too much this week. I didn’t hit everything up but today I spent some time with the new remake of Master of Magic.

The map in the remake of Master of Magic looks good in it’s updated form.

The Good and Bad

Let’s start with a key background note. I never played the original. In 1994 I was well aware of it, but I didn’t have the PC to play it. I do know that this remake is meant to be true to the original as much as possible. It comes off as that, which is both good and not-so-good.

The good. The game is not bogged down with a heavy UI or too many mechanics. It is simple and straight forward. I picked my race, picked my wizard and jumped in to play. Town building is picking from a couple early buildings. When built they unlock more buildings or units and you work your way up the chain. Researching is getting new spells for your wizard to use. Units stack up and have limited movement. Combat is good old fashion turned based combat.

The bad was mostly me getting my first stack wiped off the map. Ok, that wasn’t the games fault. Combat was challenging and enjoyable. I do wish you could see the rolls that are being made for attack and defense in combat. There was also a lot of hitting the next turn button early in the game. Not end of the world stuff.

Town building in Master of Magic is pretty straight forward.

Subheading to End Because I Guess I Need These

I had about 5 hours with the game. Not enough to really dive deep into the game but it was a solid remake for me. Definitely felt like a freshened up classic of a game. Will I go back to it? Probably not getting to the top of the list of games to hit up again on stream down the road. It’s a solid game for me, and can be a challenge, and has plenty of options to be replayed multiple times. It doesn’t wow me though. Didn’t suck me in and get me to want to stream it eight hours for multiple days. Not a lot of games do though.
